Great post. Very timely for me. I’m just finishing up the latest draft of my first novel, and I’m terrified of taking the next step! Guess I’ll have to pry it out of my own fingers eventually…

Hi Noel,

I’m really glad that you like the Changeling books so much, and even more stoked that you have chosen me for your project.
The answers to your questions are:

a) I grew up in on a housing estate in a place called South Oxhey. It was a bit rough around the edges (well, maybe more than a bit!) and not one of the nicest places. It was, however, full of interesting characters, and in hindsight I wouldn’t swap my experiences there.

b) Yes to both. I have two children who are at secondary school. Both of them are ‘early readers’ of my books and are good sounding-boards for some of my ideas.

c) I’m very lucky that my first series of books was so well received. The books were sold to a number of countries, and the feedback from them all has been great.

I find this post really helpful, it’s given me the confidence boost I needed. I’m 16 and aspiring to write my own novel before I have finished college (2 years…) and when I started doubting myself, I read this and thought, what the heck if it sounds rubbish to me, someone somewhere will appreciate it, and yes I do panic when it comes to thinking ‘is it good enough?’ but hearing it come from a published author, makes me feel all the more comfortable with the prospect of panicking over my own writing. Thanks.

Mam 13 lat i uwazam ta ksiazke za swietna.Przeczytalam wszystkie czesci, a teraz czekam na kolejna, ktora ma sie nazywac (jesli sie nie myle) “Swit zombie”. Chcialabym tylko wiedziec kiedy jest jej premiera w Polsce.

I am 13 years old and I believe this book as great. I read all the parts, and now look forward to the next, to be called (if i remember correctly) “Dawn of the Zombies”. I’d like to know just when it premiered in Poland.

Thanks for this post. I have just carried out a study (dissertation) on writing apprehension and anxiety amongst primary school children with astonishing findings. I will share some of your words with the children in the hope that gain comfort from the words of a published author
